Betting on the Nebraska Cornhuskers

A 48-9 thrashing of the South Alabama Jaguars is just what the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ doctor ordered after a crushing 33-28 defeat last week courtesy of a BYU Hail Mary pass.

[sc:NCAA240banner ]The Huskers got back on track with a massive 561-yard offensive performance on Saturday that saw Terrell Newby rumble for a career-high 198 yards and two scores. Newby broke his previous best of 107 yards on the ground that he set against the Florida Atlantic Owls.

Even Nebraska’s passing game got it going, with Tommy Armstrong Jr. throwing for 270 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Wideout Lane Hovey, who had just five receptions for 69 yards in the past two seasons, nearly downright equaled his career totals last weekend after making five catches for 68 yards.

Hovey’s involvement will be critical in the upcoming game against Miami, as the Canes have only allowed 96 passing yards per game this season, albeit that the team faced relatively weak opponents for the first two games.

Over on defense, The Cornhuskers have to force turnovers like they did against the Jaguars this past weekend with three. Although the team won last season’s encounter against Miami, Brad Kaaya torched the Huskers’ secondary for 359 yds and three scores, but did throw two costly picks that proved to be the difference in the game.

The total has gone over in Nebraska’s last six games.

Betting on the Miami Hurricanes

Hurricanes Brad Kaaya

The Miami Hurricanes continue to live up to their team name as their whirlwind of an offense laid another opposing defense to waste with a resounding 44-20 victory on the road against the Florida Atlantic Owls.

It was actually a tougher outing than expected for Miami, who entered halftime tied with the Owls at 20 apiece. The Canes’ offense then came to life in the second half, outgaining Florida Atlantic in yards 395-97 en route to 22 unanswered points to seal the game.

Star quarterback Brad Kaaya was once again efficient with his 287 yards in the air to go with a touchdown. Make that 15 career starts with a touchdown pass in each of those games for the sophomore play-caller.

And it wasn’t just Kaaya who ruled the skies last Saturday, as even Miami’s backfield wreaked havoc on the ground. Mark Walton had 42 rushing yards and accounted for three of the team’s TDs, while fellow back Joseph Yearby racked up 146 yards and found the end zone once himself. Yearby even added 97 yards and a touchdown in the receiving game, giving him a whopping 243 all-purpose yards for the day.

Going back to last season’s 41-31 loss to the Huskers, it was the Canes’ run defense that did them in during that game. Thankfully, prolific running back Ameer Abdullah (229 yards and 2 TDs in last year’s bout) is no longer playing for Nebraska. Miami’s defense has only allowed 234 yards per game against two middling teams, but has given up 138 of those yards against the rush. Containing Nebraska’s Newby, who is coming off of a career game, is imperative for the Canes to emerge victorious.

Miami is 2-4 both straight-up and ATS in its past six games.

Writer’s Prediction

Miami with a solid win at home, 27-23, to improve their season record to a spotless 3-0.
