Offseason Update (8/5/2014)
Geno Smith maybe the starting quarterback for now but he must not feel that comfortable as Michael Vick has turned out for training camp with more spring to his step and with a look of someone who has something to prove. The 34-year-old, who was cut by the Eagles after the emergence of Nick Foles last season, has looked like the Michael Vick of old, generating two big plays with his feet in a scrimmage last Saturday.
[sc:NFL240banner ]As it stands though, Smith still has the trust of head coach Rex Ryan but the pressure is on him to improve on his atrocious performance last season where he was at the bottom of the heap when it came to passer ratings of starting quarterbacks. He will have a new weapon in his arsenal though this coming season with the signing of wide receiver Eric Decker who has made a smooth transition to the Jets’ lineup.
There is a more harmonious feel among the wide receivers now compared to before when Santonio Holmes was still in the lineup and that is good news in terms of team chemistry which is a vital component in building competitive teams.
Overview
2013-14 Regular Season: 8-8 SU 9-6-1 ATS
It was a horrible end to an otherwise-strong 2013 season for the New York Jets, particularly their rookie quarterback Geno Smith who started the campaign with so much promise but ended it with a huge thud. The Jets were eliminated two games before the season was even finished, thanks in large part to their deficiencies in the offensive end. The main culprit was Smith who was last among 37 starting quarterbacks last season with a paltry 66.5 passer rating.
He only threw for 12 touchdowns last season and was intercepted 21 times. With that in mind, Jets head coach Rex Ryan decided to bring in 34-year-old veteran Michael Vick to create some competition for the quarterback position and in turn boost their chances in bagging the Super Bowl where they are currently pegged at +6,000 to win it all.
Offseason Highlights
Apart from Michael Vick, the Jets focused their offseason plans on retooling their offense which finished 31st in passing yards with a measly 183.3 per game. They signed wide receiver Eric Decker from Denver in a five-year deal worth $36.25M. They also signed running back Chris Johnson who’s out to prove that the Tennessee Titans were wrong in letting him go. Apart from the two, the Jets signed rookie tight end Jace Amaro who set NCAA tight end receiving records last year for Texas Tech.
The Jets hope that this upgrade in their offense will help them in the AFC where they are currently priced at +2,800 to take the championship and +750 to take home the AFC East crown.
Key NFL Betting Matchups of 2014 NFL Season
October 12 vs. Denver Broncos
WR Eric Decker will suit up for the first time against his former team in this one after the Broncos almost won it all last year until they were stopped by the Seattle Seahawks.
December 21 vs. New England Patriots
With the season on the line, the Jets who are given a line of 7.0 regular season wins odds, will have to once again get past Tom Brady and the New England Patriots for them to advance to the playoffs for the first time in four years. The Jets are 3-2 ATS in their last 5 home games against the Patriots.
Prediction
The toughness of their schedule as well as the uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position will send the Jets to a record below .500 and out of the playoffs for the fourth-straight season.
