Both Minnesota and Seattle had rousing wins in these two teams’ respective preseason openers. The Vikings blanked the Buffalo Bills last Thursday, 17-10, while the Seahawks destroyed the Los Angeles Chargers, 48-17. Against the Bills, Minnesota surrendered 309 total yards but killed plenty of Buffalo’s third-down attacks (4-for-15). The Vikings need to do better against a Seattle squad that racked up 458 total yards against the Chargers. Trevone Boykin had 189 yards on 12 of 15 passing for a touchdown with an interception. He also had a touchdown run and 31 yards on four carries.
Writer’s Prediction
Seattle (-3.5) wins, 21-17.
Washington Nationals vs. San Diego Padres (10:15 PM ET)
Line: Washington Nationals (-200) vs. San Diego Padres (+170); total: 7.0 – view all MLB lines
It’s not fun to face Max Scherzer but that’s the fate the Padres have to deal with later tonight. Scherzer comes into this game carrying a 12-5 record and a 2.25 ERA. Scherzer, however, is winless in three starts this month despite a 2.40 ERA and 0.87 WHIP this August. Bryce Harper remains out with a knee injury but Washington’s hitters have a .306 batting average against Luis Perdomo. (And that’s counting Harper’s 0-for-4 line against the Dominican hurler.) Perdomo’s numbers aren’t as sexy with the Padres’ righty is just 6-7 with a 4.95 ERA in 21 starts this year. San Diego will look to get some offense going against Scherzer from Wil Myers, who is 4-for-13 with a pair of homers against the Washington ace.
Writer’s Prediction
Washington (-200) runs over San Diego, 6-2.
