College football is more than just an appetizer for the NFL season. And now that it’s upon us, we don’t have a choice but to consume it. There’ll be hundreds of game that’ll be played across the nation but only a small percentage of that rightfully deserves the nation’s attention. Here are five of them.

5. Auburn Tigers vs. Clemson Tigers (September 9)
Deshaun Watson is no longer under center for the Tigers so there’ll be a plenty of eyeballs on whichever quarterback Clemson will start against the team from the SEC. It’s tough to match what Watson did last season but it’s not only the Clemson who’ll be parading a new quarterback in this game. Auburn is expected to make Baylor transfer Jarrett Stidham its starter after the quarterback threw for 1,265 yards and 12 touchdowns with a couple of interceptions in 2015 for the Bears.
4. Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Auburn Tigers (November 25)
The Iron Bowl is a date that will always be circled on every football fan’s calendar regardless of how either Alabama or Auburn fare prior to this hatefest. Nick Saban’s boys have won each of the last three meetings, including a lopsided 30-12 victory at Tuscaloosa last season.
Jalen Hurts, who is +2,000 to win the Heisman Trophy this season after nearly doing that last year, has to elevate his game in terms of throwing the rock, considering that the Tide lost three of their top three receivers from 2016. It remains to be seen, but if Jarrett Stidham turned out to be an elite SEC quarterback, the Tide could have trouble on November at Jordan-Hare Stadium, where Auburn is 4-2 ATS in its last six home games against ‘Bama.
3. Florida State Seminoles vs. Clemson Tigers (November 11)
Here’s another November game that could have huge implications on how the College Football Playoff would shape up not to mention that this showdown could decide who wins the ACC. The Seminoles lost a close one (37-34) to Clemson last season with Dalvin Cook doing all kind of damage on the Tigers’ then vaunted defense. Well, Cook is in the NFL now and so is Clemson’s Deshaun Watson so expect a very different game complexion this time around in this matchup.
2. Texas Longhorns vs. USC Trojans (September 16)
The Tom Herman era starts in Austin this season and in Week 3, he’ll get his toughest assignment yet as the new head coach of the Longhorns when they travel to California against USC.
A win would be big for the Trojans, who are looking to resurrect a declining program that hasn’t had much to show in recent seasons. The Longhorns take the Trojans’ offense that will be run on the field by early Heisman Trophy favorite Sam Darnold. Darnold was incredible last season, when he lead the Trojans to nine-consecutive wins, capped by USC’s Rose Bowl win over Penn State.
1. Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Florida State Seminoles (September 2)
This collision between two mammoth programs gets thrown our way right in the very first week of the new college football season. What’s not to like?
The Crimson Tide are the preseason faves to take home the national title with odds of +350, while Florida State’s is at +750. Alabama has lost lots of talent from last season on defense, but hey, this is Alabama, which easily replenishes personnel losses by way of elite recruiting. Plus the Tide still have Jalen Hurts. The Noles lost Cook but Deondre Francois (+1,500 to win Heisman Trophy) may show why he’s projected to be one of the best QB’s in college this coming season.
